Apex Legends' Specialized Traversal Techniques Become Widely Accessible During This Update

The game developers have a special treat in store for the popular battle royale players, arriving just in time for festive season. Fans of the battle royale's highly fluid movement will be pleased to discover that a new movement mechanic will be introduced when Season 27: Amped launches on Nov. 4.

Unveiling Mantle Boosting

Dubbed "Momentum Boosting" by Respawn, this ability provides gamers a burst of forward momentum when climbing over obstacles. According to key developer the design lead, this technique was previously existed of Apex Legends for some time, usually referred to as "ledge boosting." However it's no easy feat for casual gamers, and is mainly used by pro gamers in competitive play or tournaments. This season, the team is making it easier for everyone to successfully perform these advanced speed-boosts.

"Mantle Boosts existed in Apex for a while, but executing it isn't easy to perform and gamers would never know it's possible without outside knowledge," the designer explains. "Now including a visual cue so users can easily see when and how to trigger the fast-paced movement ability, making accessible the feature and introducing new ways to compete for more players."

Why Opening Up Advanced Mechanics

What's the reason for making a previously obscure movement quirk available to everyone? Principal designer Josh Mohan explains developers aims for gamers to experience empowerment — even those who are new.

"[The playerbase] performs advanced techniques like super-gliding and tap-strafing, and we looked around at other games, observed what the community are doing, and we said, 'How can we extend these capabilities to a broader audience?'" Mohan explains. "Because right now, some of these advanced [movement] mechanics are somewhat awkward to use — it requires to remap your keybinds and hit precise timings. So we said, 'What if we create a more official implementation?'"

Season 27 Emphasis on Mobility

Mobility is primarily the name of the game in Season 27, with characters the gravity mage, the defensive specialist, and Valkyrie receiving buffs to maintain them mobile. Recovery time on her tactical ability is shorter, and this skill will boost players upward much quicker than it used to. Rampart's Amped Cover feature overhead protection and the ability to provide movement bonuses to allies in range. However the spotlight is on the high-flying this Legend who's getting the most attention this season, with multiple tweaks implemented to make her stronger, quicker, and deadlier.

"I think many agree that Valkyrie's time has arrived," states character developer Ian Holstead. "Certainly that she's been dominant previously, but with the introduction of new Legends, movement[-based] passives, and redeployment tools, it seemed like she fell behind in current the game. It was a really great opportunity for us to revisit multiple elements [of her kit] and essentially bring her back to her glory days."

Valkyrie's Upgrades

To reclaim Valkyrie's relevance in current strategies, the developer notes Respawn evaluated all her skills and introduced significant modifications. Her VTOL Jets have been upgraded, boosting her speed while airborne, and this equipment regenerates much quicker, allowing her to spend more time aloft. She can no longer be harmed from her own Missile Swarm, which was enhanced to mark enemies who are hit from the missiles. Her squad redeploy skill — which launches teammates into the air for repositioning or escape — now takes much less time to fire up. Additionally, she gains recently added perk choices that users can select to reduce fuel consumption, expand the spread of her Missile Swarm, or accelerate her ultimate activation.

"Valkyrie's equipment now delivers on that jet-fighter fantasy," he comments.

Olympus Improvements

Additionally, the lone airborne map, this location, is getting a mobility-focused facelift, with an extensive redesign that expands choke points and renders securing elevated positions a bit less daunting. The developers state the game Season 27 focuses on providing gamers the resources required to keep up with the competition.

"Really, we were looking at Apex's core identity as a fast-paced FPS," says lead Legend designer the lead.

The battle royale the Amped season launches November 4th at 10 a.m. PST/1 p.m. EST.
