Females Unite In Support of Catherine Zeta-Jones Over Criticism Over Age Remarks

Oscar-winning actor Catherine Zeta-Jones faced online commentary over her appearance at a Netflix FYC event last month.

There is a groundswell of support behind acclaimed star Zeta-Jones after she faced criticism on social media about her appearance following a red carpet appearance.

The actor was present at an industry gathering in Los Angeles on 9 November where an online segment discussing her role in the new series of the 'Wednesday' show was eclipsed because of comments concerning her looks.

Voices of Support

Aged 58, Laura White, labelled the negative reaction "complete nonsense", stating that "males escape this sell-by/use-by date imposed on women".

"Men are free from this expiration date that women do," argued Laura White.

Writer and commentator Sali Hughes, 50, commented differently from men, females are subject to unfair scrutiny as they age and the actor deserves to be able to appear in any way she chooses.

Digital Backlash

Within the clip, also shared to Facebook and attracted over 2.5 million views, the actor, hailing from Swansea, discussed how much she enjoyed portraying her role, Morticia Addams, in season two.

Yet a significant number of the numerous remarks zeroed in on her years and were critical towards her looks.

The online backlash sparked significant support of the actor, featuring a viral video from a social media user which said: "There is criticism for females if they undergo treatments and bully them if they avoid sufficient procedures."

Others also rallied in support, as one put it: "She is aging naturally and she looks gorgeous."

Many labelled her as "beautiful" and "very attractive", and one comment read that "she looks her age - which is simply life."

Challenging Perceptions

Ms White appeared makeup-free for her interview as a demonstration.

Ms White arrived for her interview earlier makeup-free to make a statement and to demonstrate the absence of a "mold" of how a female of a certain age should look like.

As with others in her demographic, she explained she "looks after herself" not for a youthful appearance but in order to feel "improved" and be "in good health".

"Ageing is a privilege and when we age the best we can, that is what is important," she continued.

She contended that men were not judged by equivalent appearance ideals, noting "nobody scrutinizes the age of certain male celebrities are - they just look 'fantastic'."

She explained it was one of the reasons for entering the competition for over-45s, to prove that midlife women remain relevant" and "possess it".

Unfair Scrutiny

Sali Hughes, an author and presenter from Wales, commented that while the actor is "beautiful" this is "irrelevant", adding she ought to be free to appear however she liked absent her years facing scrutiny.
