A substantial bluefin tuna created waves at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, garnering a historic bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; ÂŁ2.4m) during the venue's opening auction of the year.

The successful bid for the 535-pound fish came from the parent firm of a popular sushi restaurant group, which runs locations domestically and abroad.

"An inaugural tuna heralds good luck," stated the company president, a notable figure at the yearly first sale.

Referred to as the King of Tuna, this industry figure is noted for placing record bids for bluefin tuna at these high-profile year-opening auctions.

Bidding Shock and Historic Past

After the auction, the successful bidder admitted to journalists that he was "astonished at the final price," adding, "I believed we would be able to acquire it a little at a lower price, but the price skyrocketed rapidly."

This latest acquisition surpasses his own notable purchases:

  • He bid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
  • He spent 155 million yen the following year.
  • In 2019, he won a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1m).

Even after once remarking that he thought he "bid too high," he has now managed to shatter his personal record another time.

An Annual Spectacle of High Prices

The first auction at the Tokyo fish market is typically known for exorbitant prices. Last year, the initial tuna was bought for 207 million yen by a different culinary group, which indicated the fish would be featured at its eateries throughout the country.

The intense atmosphere at the fish market during these pre-dawn auctions has evolved into a popular tourist attraction in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.

From Auction to Plate

The extremely valuable tuna was quickly prepared for patrons at the bidder's sushi restaurants shortly after the auction ended.

"I feel like I've commenced the year in a good way after tasting something so auspicious as the year gets underway," remarked one elated patron.
