Rob Edwards along with O'Neil represent the initial names in the frame to succeed Vitor Pereira as manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The previous coach was sacked on Sunday after the squad's 10-match without a victory start to the Premier League campaign.

And both candidates - each of whom have historic associations to the team - are part of the options to be considered by the club leadership.

Edwards is currently at Middlesbrough, which would pose a possible obstacle to his appointment at Molineux.

However the ex- Luton Town manager - who made more than 100 of games for Wolves during his playing career - is said to be a leading candidate for the position.

The 42-year-old is said to have support from the club board as they begin the search of appointing a fresh manager.

Gary O'Neil is also emerging as a unexpected candidate, although he would be a shock appointment given he was sacked by Wolves in the previous winter.

The ex- West Ham United midfielder is currently unemployed meaning the club would not need to provide any compensation.
