The English Team to Begin Euro 2028 Campaign at City’s Home Ground

England’s men’s team will embark on their UEFA Euro 2028 campaign at the Manchester City’s stadium, provided that they achieve the relatively straightforward entry for a tournament taking place in most of the United Kingdom and the Ireland.

Manchester City’s home ground has not staged an English men’s fixture since eight years ago, when the Turkish team were defeated 2-1 in a friendly, but is almost certain to stage the national team for their opening fixture on June 10, 2028.

The team are planned to play their concluding group fixtures at the national stadium, but, if they top Group B, their knockout stage opener would occur at St James’ Park. Placing second would mean beginning the elimination stage at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Championship Launch and Demonstration

The tournament was inaugurated at an event in Piccadilly Circus on Wednesday evening. Key representatives from the tournament organizers and the host FAs were confronted as they entered the location by around fifty pro-Palestine demonstrators, who called for Israel to be kicked out from international football because of the Gaza crisis.

Banners were raised with phrases stating “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while protesters shouted: “Kick Israel out.”

Tournament Fixture List

The inaugural fixture of Euro 2028 will be played at the the national stadium of Wales in the Welsh capital, on Friday 9 June, a game that will involve the Dragons if they secure a place.

The national stadium will host the two semi-final matches and the title decider, which will be staged on a Sunday in July 2028 with a start time at late afternoon.

It is hoped that an afternoon start, which will also be implemented for UEFA Champions League finals from the upcoming season, will appeal to families and help reach a broader range of fans.

Qualifying Teams

The Republic of Ireland are due to play their initial fixture at the Aviva Stadium and Scotland would follow suit at the national stadium of Scotland.

The national sides of all four hosts will participate in the preliminary stage; two automatic spots will be set aside for any that fail to qualify for Euro 2028 through that route.

Stadiums and Playoffs

The Birmingham venue and Spurs’ ground round out the nine host stadiums. Every stadium will hold at least one elimination game, with the quarterfinal matches held at the national stadium of each host.

The qualifying draw will be conducted in Belfast, which was excluded as a venue city last year when it emerged the proposed venue could not be redeveloped in time, on 6 December 2026.

Leadership Comment

“The event will be a championship for the supporters and a festival of everything we love about the sport – its passion and power to bring people together.”

In excess of three million admissions, a record for a men’s European Championship, are projected to be offered to fans.
