The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Chose the Wrong Critical Role Track

This latest animated series, the newest animated adventure from Critical Role, revealed an exciting introductory sequence. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, misfits, and rogues fighting hard and taking names, while teasing at several agonizing backstories for characters including the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, Fjord.

All in all, the opening appears amazing. However, I felt that an element was missing in the music selection.

The intro uses "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar composition composed by artist the talented musician. This piece from the official score of that title, the second release put out by the production company's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great nostalgic choice, and I suspect that fans of the second campaign will love its presence.

Personally, The Mighty Nein's intro doesn't quite capture the hype and excitement that accompanied the show's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit in my view when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it improved further when cast member Sam Riegel wrote words to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.

Featuring vocals from one actress, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the track was memorable and fun. At the time, I hadn't seen the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my device. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you start an installment of adventurous fun.

The Mighty Nein's opening with "the new song" fails to hit the right notes in my opinion. It's an impressive piece of music, but based on my understanding of the group, I feel that its mood is a little off.

Of course, the creators has already said that the animated show will have some surprises and variations from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its intro appears as one of them.

The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on the streaming service from November 19. For those eager until then, or want a head start to get to know the characters of the second series, the original episodes are accessible on the audio platform and YouTube.
