They're Applying in America What They Did to Christianity

Trumpism's most revealing and characteristic moments – not its most significant, nor most harsh, nor most dangerous, nor most foolish, but perhaps its most illuminating – occurred earlier this fall. In the course of a few weeks, the nation's leader commenced revealing the public his designs for a lavish reception room two times larger of the White House and subsequently started unilaterally ripping down the eastern section to build it.

He has done things 10,000 times as bad – the existing assessment of fatalities due to his slashing to international aid is 600,000 and increasing, and recently an analysis forecast his fossil fuel policies would kill 1.3 million more. But nothing as definitional. No other president would have attempted – genuinely, no other president would have contemplated – independently wrecking large sections of the White House in order to erect a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the direct cooperation of multiple America's wealthiest, almost all of whom conduct transactions with the government.

As disorienting as it is to witness the leader try to upend the old idea about democracy and exchange it with its complete opposite, there remains a substantial portion of Americans who wouldn't consider it completely novel. This includes individuals like us – in older age cohorts almost a majority – who were brought up as conventional Protestant believers.

We have watched throughout the years as politically conservative religious groups turned the Jesus we learned about into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. Essentially, they turned a figure of love into an icon of hostility who blesses specifically the brutality that he condemned in the Gospel; this change developed at a slower pace, through multiple decades as opposed to months, yet it remains unsettling in the same ways, a disorienting gut punch for numerous individuals.

A Damaging Christianity Establishes Itself

So let me first describe the Jesus from my upbringing, as conceptually Jesus is the center of Christian religion, and since the rapidly expanding group among Americans might have little sense about him because they identify as atheists or doubters or nones. I raise no objection with any of these traditions, nor with alternative spiritual paths; yet I maintain that contain precious wisdom of great price in the Christian story.

The evident and straightforward truth that the Savior of the gospels advocates for a type of radical love focused on the impoverished has consistently rendered the Christian faith something of a controversial faith: attractive to the populace, but because of its intrinsic extremism demanding to be contained. In the 1950s it was controlled through watering down – Protestant Christianity was so widespread that it essentially blessed current circumstances.

A Conflict for the Finest of Us

So I have been encouraged to see the persistent defiance against Trump develop in this past year. It has been great solace to assist in constructing the movement that has demonstrated publicly in rally after rally, and appears to have motivated electorate to turn out in large quantities during minor elections. We will need to persist with it, and through comparable resolve, featuring US banners at every demonstration and calls to the best parts of American history.
